What can health systems learn from a mission-led approach to innovation?

Book your place at the region’s Innovation Insights webinar and hear reflections, lessons, and next steps after three years of a mission-led approach to research and innovation,

Health and care are at a critical juncture. Costs are rising, demand is increasing and the legacy of the pandemic continues to stretch our workforce and our services. The challenges are complex and interdependent and not problems that can be solved in isolation.

In parallel, the pace of innovation in health, life sciences, and technology has never been greater. But experience and evidence tell us that innovation alone is not enough. The real challenge lies in how to organise, adopt, and scale approaches across large complex systems.

Across the last three years, the North West London (NWL) system has come together to test a mission-led approach to innovation – tackling complex challenges that cannot be solved through isolated projects alone. This has meant aligning leadership, delivery, and learning around shared outcomes at scale.

To share early learning from this work, Imperial College Health Partners (ICHP) is hosting a free webinar to explore what has worked, what didn’t and where future effort might be best placed.

Missions for Better Health: Reflections from system-wide innovation in North West London
Date: Tuesday 24 February
Time: 1pm – 2pm
Location: Microsoft Teams

The webinar also marks the launch of our Mission Learning Report, which captures early impact, practical lessons and leadership and delivery reflections from moving away from one-off innovation initiatives towards long-term, mission-driven collaboration across the health and care system. The report draws on learning from the North West London missions programme, including case studies such as the implementation of OPTICA – which has delivered real-world impact for both Chelsea and Westminster and Hillingdon Hospitals, and is ready to be scaled across NWL .

During the session, you’ll hear from:

  • Dr Dominique Allwood, Chief Executive, Imperial College Health Partners
  • Matthew Chisambi, Director, Imperial College Health Partners
  • Dr Charlotte Benjamin, Medical Officer, NWL Integrated Care Board (from 1 April, West and North London Integrated Care Board)
  • Adam Ashworth, Innovation Lead and Enabling More Days at Home Mission Lead, Imperial College Health Partners

The webinar will be relevant to NHS leaders, Quality Improvement and Transformation Leads, Innovation Managers, Local Authority colleagues, system partners, researchers, innovators and industry, and organisations interested in mission-led working, system transformation and delivering impact at scale.

Dr Dominique Allwood, Chief Executive of Imperial College Health Partners, said:

A mission-led approach provides a way of connecting innovation with purpose and translating ambition into tangible and system wide improvement. We hope this open account of our learning serves as a valuable resource to support others who are navigating how to best adopt and scale innovation in complex systems.
