CNWL Chief Medical Officer appointed Senior Responsible Officer of North West London Patient Safety Collaborative

The North West London Patient Safety Collaborative (NWL PSC) has announced the appointment of new Senior Responsible Officer, Dr Cornelius Kelly. Dr Kelly’s appointment follows the alignment of the NWL PSC with the North West London Integrated Care Board (ICB) over the past year.

Dr Kelly is the Chief Medical Officer of Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust – providing community health services. As CMO, he is the sponsor of the Trust’s Improvement Academy, contributing to the development of a culture of continuous quality improvement within CNWL. Dr Kelly joined the North West London Trust in 2001 having previously spent eight years as a psychiatrist for Older Adults in City and Hackney, where his other roles included Clinical Director for older adult services, Medical Director and the Chair of Medical Staff Committee.

NWL PSC is part of the national Patient Safety Collaborative commissioned by NHS England. Its ambition is to increase capability, improve culture and achieve better clinical outcomes through continuous quality improvement, with five key themes: management of deterioration, maternity and neonatal health, medicines optimisation, mental health, and system safety.

The NWL PSC is hosted by Imperial College Health Partners (ICHP), as the Academic Health Science Network for North West London. It is governed by NWL ICB’s Quality Group, chaired by Chief Nursing Officer, Charlie Sheldon.

Commenting on Dr Kelly’s appointment, Charlie Sheldon said:

“I’m delighted to welcome Dr Cornelius Kelly as Senior Responsible Officer for the North West London AHSN Patient Safety Collaborative. I look forward to working with Dr Kelly to ensure we align the work of the PSC around our local safety programmes, where we will continue to have a shared focus on maternity, managing deterioration, medicine safety, and mental health.”

Dr Jonty Heaversedge, Executive Director (Clinical), at Imperial College Health Partners reflected:

“The continued collaboration between the Patient Safety Collaborative and North West London ICB is key to delivering our shared ambition to support local teams to continuously improve patient safety. Dr Kelly’s leadership will help to further augment this partnership to ensure we can collectively optimise impact in relation to patient safety priorities in North West London.”

Dr Cornelius Kelly said:

“I am delighted to contribute to patient safety across North West London as Senior Responsible Officer for the Patient Safety Collaborative. I passionately believe that all our staff want to deliver safe care to patients in their own service, and across care pathways and systems. I am confident that by working together through the PSC, we can proactively support staff in that ambition.”
