Background
Imperial College Health Partners (ICHP), as the North West London Health Innovation Network, hosts the North West London Patient Safety Collaborative, which supports delivery of national patient safety improvement priorities across the health and care system.
The Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme supports maternity and neonatal services to improve outcomes, reduce unwarranted variation and strengthen implementation of national safety priorities. During 2026/27, the programme is focused on several priority improvement areas, including implementation of Maternal Early Warning Scores (MEWS), NEWTT2 readiness and optimisation of pre-term infant care.
About the role: Independent Clinical Consultant (North West London Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme)
Imperial College Health Partners (ICHP) is looking for an Independent Clinical Consultant for a short-term contract of approximately six weeks. The person who needs to be a Registered Midwife with active NMC registration would be providing specialist clinical expertise and advisory support to accelerate delivery of priority maternity and neonatal safety improvement activities in North West London.
The consultant will be engaged to deliver a defined package of work and associated outputs that support system-wide readiness, implementation planning and improvement activity relating to:
- Digital MEWS implementation
- NEWTT2 implementation readiness
- Optimisation of pre-term infant care
- Safety culture and escalation processes
- Quality improvement and measurement approaches
The consultant will operate independently, applying their own professional judgement and expertise to determine the most appropriate approach for delivering the agreed outputs.
Skills and Experience Required
Essential
- Registered Midwife with active NMC registration.
- Significant experience within maternity and/or neonatal services.
- Demonstrable expertise in maternity safety improvement.
- Strong understanding of MEWS, NEWTT2, escalation pathways and maternity safety priorities.
- Experience of quality improvement, patient safety or service transformation initiatives.
- Ability to analyse complex information and formulate practical recommendations.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and deliver agreed outputs within a short timescale.
Desirable
- Experience supporting implementation of digital MEWS solutions.
- Experience in maternity governance, patient safety or quality improvement leadership.
- Knowledge of PSIRF, human factors or safety culture approaches.
- Experience developing implementation tools, guidance, reports or improvement resources.
- Experience facilitating collaborative learning across organisations.
