We are proud to announce that our Suspicion of Sepsis (SOS) Insights Dashboard has won the HSJ Patient Safety Award 2019 for ‘Best Emerging Solution for Patient Safety’.
The judges said: “We were particularly impressed with the collaborative work this team undertook and the scale and pace of this project. We also commend the ambitious plans for further development.”
The SOS Dashboard has been created by Imperial College Health Partners (ICHP) through the Patient Safety Collaborative (PSC), in collaboration with NHS Improvement’s Patient Safety Measurement Unit and NHS England and Improvement, building on the methodology for measuring sepsis previously published by Oxford AHSN.
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition. Without early identification and treatment there is a significant risk of long-term disability or death, but sepsis currently doesn’t have a gold standard diagnostic test or stable clinical definition.
The SOS Dashboard enables NHS staff to improve patient care and reduces potential harm by – for the first time ever – providing consistent, accurate and reliable data on sepsis outcomes. It saves healthcare professional’s time by making the data freely and easily accessible in usable format and provides relevant data which can be intelligently applied with precision to improve the quality of patient care. Local teams determine which methods work best over time, and which may need to be spread more widely across a region or nationally. It will ultimately help to better plan and prepare local services potentially saving lives across the country.

The Dashboard has huge potential to help reduce harm and already enables clinicians to track the impact of their interventions in order to deliver safer care. Winning this award will further enable our aspirations to build the adoption and spread of this work by developing the Dashboard to support clinicians to better recognise and diagnose Sepsis.”
Since the tool’s creation last year the Dashboard has continued to go from strength to strength with growing adoption and spread across the entire country. Including national endorsement from Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and included in the NHS Long term plan announcement for Sepsis.

The HSJ Patient Safety Awards recognise, reward and thank the hard-working teams and individuals who, in these times of austerity, pay restraints and workforce shortages are having to work harder and under more pressure. It is a testament to the sector that the safety and care of patients is still the primary driver, and our NHS continues to be the global leader in safety. In that context, it’s important to showcase the successes of all those involved in patient safety.
