It is not news to anyone that the NHS and healthcare is facing a multitude of challenges. Innovation has a real part to play in addressing some of these challenges, and clinicians working together with start-ups, SMEs and entrepreneurs can be a powerful force in accelerating change. HealthMakeSpace is a new online platform, developed in partnership with Imperial College Health Partners, that aims to accelerate change across the NHS by connecting industry and entrepreneurs with clinicians to foster clinically guided innovation. Developed as a networking platform, once users have registered, HealthMakeSpace matches the skills, expertise and locations of healthcare professionals to the needs of those working in industry.
Not just a networking platform…
Increasingly, the NHS is recognising innovation as central not only to the future of healthcare services but also to the career structures of healthcare professionals. Clinicians using HealthMakeSpace will have their time spent on innovation projects verified by the industry partners they have worked with. The platform allows users to demonstrate hours committed to furthering innovation in their chosen area of clinical interest. Printable certificates can be used at interviews and speciality selection days as proof of dedication to that subject matter (e.g. Paediatric trainee working on developing paediatric asthma app).
Although still in its infancy, HealthMakeSpace has already attracted over 60 SMEs and entrepreneurs and more than 100 clinicians – all who have an ambition to come together to drive healthcare innovation.
